Product Features
The static var compensator (SVC) is a device that can control the line voltage quickly and reliably. SVCs typically regulate and control the voltage to the desired set point under normal steady-state and sporadic conditions, providing dynamic, fast-responding reactive power in response to system emergencies (e. g., line short, line and generator disconnections). In addition, SVC can also improve transmission capacity, reduce losses, reduce active power oscillations and prevent overvoltage during load losses.
SVCs are customized to meet the specific needs of each customer. The SVC is composed of a number of fixed or variable branches, at least one of which includes a thyristor, and the combination of branches can be greatly adjusted according to requirements.
SVCs typically include a combination of at least two of the following (e. g., TCR / FC or TCR / TSC / FC):

· Thyristor controlled reactor (TCR)

· Thyristor Switched Capacitor (TSC)

· Harmonic Filter Capacitor (FC)

· Mechanical switching capacitor bank (MSC) or reactor bank (MSR)

Common topologies for SVCs are: TCR / FC or TCR / TSC/FC. The main advantage of using a topology with TSC branches is that losses can be reduced (by reducing the size of the filter). Both the high and low voltage sides of the SVC transformer can be equipped with mechanically switched capacitor banks to increase the total reactive power support outside the dynamic range. The SVC control system can be used to control new or existing external shunt capacitor banks.
